There’s something wonderful about finding art that inspires you, even just for a little moment. Parisian artist and model Gabrielle Rul paints with different mediums in a unique style of her own. Her work has been described as “an invitation to let go and hope against a background of sincere melancholy, always with sincerity in the foreground”. We were drawn to the beautiful strokes as a depiction of her imagination. After reaching out all the way from Sydney to Paris, Gabrielle was kind enough to share more about who she is and her creative practice with us in our chat below.
How would your friends describe you?
I actually have no clue so I just asked two of them: "Friends for me it's when they are "here for me" when it's good and when it's bad. When they can support me when I'm sad and also be happy for my small and big win. You are here." And, "U are a great listener, honest, and you would never leave a friend in a bad situation. U have a great sense of humour, people can really trust you w everything."
It's the result of what I see everyday, twisted by my imagination. I love to have a different perspective in my brain. It makes everyday life a little bit brighter.
We love the moments and imagination that your work depicts. What influences your work and creative practice?
It's the result of what I see everyday, twisted by my imagination. I love to have a different perspective in my brain. It makes everyday life a little bit brighter. I do sketches constantly on my mind and on paper. Then it takes a while for me to mentally digest them, and then it clicks. Time to lay the final version. I always aim for point A but constantly lands next to it. So I start again and gain. On the way it gives me other ideas. It's like a creativity tree that doesn't stop growing.
What are your favourite mediums to use and why?
I don't have a favourite. I love ink, I love watercolour. I get bored easily so I jump constantly from one to another.
I love to wear clothes that make me stand straight and walking proud. To feel like a dancer when I move.
What is your everyday style like?
I like to see clothes as an armour. I love to keep things simple but efficient. It is so important to me. For example, I know if I get dressed in slouchy clothes all winter, depression have higher chances to hit. It might sound weird but I really think it has an effect. I love to wear clothes that make me stand straight and walking proud. To feel like a dancer when I move.
What does slow living mean to you?
I don't really believe in slow living per se. To me it's an expression people set in contradiction of the world we're living in. Where everything happens so fast, constantly jumping to new things without taking the time to appreciate it. I don't like the term "Slow living" but I believe in appreciating experiences we get to live.
Can you share a little bit about your cat? So cute!
Actually it is not mine. He belongs to a lady in the building but he rules our lives in a way. He can be super cute then switch his mood in the blink of an eye. We have a love hate relationship. But the day I was shooting the dress he was taking a particular interest in being in the frame.
Do you have any self-care rituals that you like to take?
It's been two years that I set a morning ritual. As soon as i open my eyes i go straight to my mat and I do Pilates or yoga. It's a good warm up physically and mentally to prepare for the day slowly. Then a short walk around to get something for breakfast. And my day can start. I love to take walks. Walks are so underrated but observing the world around is the best thing we can do.
Be sincere when you create, do it for you first.
Any words of wisdom you'd like to share with other young artists out there?
Be sincere when you create, do it for you first. Do not listen to people opinion about your work, keep going. Don't set boundaries for no reason. You can be afraid of course but always do something. Nothing comes from standing still.
What are your next endeavours for the rest of 2022 or next year in 2023?
I am working on different projects but I don't really like to talk about things before they're out. You never know. :)
